BQ24160ARGER is a highly integrated linear charger for single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer batteries. This integrated circuit provides a self-contained solution for charging high-capacity Lithium-lon/Li-Polymer batteries and features a regulated 5V output, a high efficiency load switch, reverse current protection, and over-voltage protection. The BQ24160ARGER also provides extensive safety features including thermal shutdown and over-current protection.

Applications of BQ24160ARGER includes intelligent mobile devices including Smartphones, tablets, and other hand-held portable products such as MP3 players, digital cameras, Bluetooth headsets, and cellular phone accessories. The BQ24160ARGER is designed for use in applications that require a high-efficiency, low RDS(ON) mosfet power switch, and reverse current and over-voltage protection for Lithium-ion/Li-Polymer batteries.

The BQ24160ARGER utilizes a highly integrated linear charging substrate to reduce the number of external components. The controller automatically recognizes battery type and adjusts the charge current level as well as the charging voltage to optimize battery life and performance. It is also able to detect battery temperature and automatically suspend or resume charging based on the temperature level. The charging cycle is burst terminated, ends after the battery is full, or the TIMEOUT pin expires to prevent over-charging.

The BQ24160ARGER integrates a switch-mode topology with a high efficiency synchronous buck regulator. The synchronous buck regulator includes a high-side and low-side power MOSFET, as well as switching and control circuitry. The high-side MOSFET supplies a constant current to the battery and the low-side MOSFET provides a regulated output voltage. The MOSFETs are operated in a complementary mode to maximize efficiency and reduce switching losses.

The BQ24160ARGER integrates two Fault flags, F_OTG (over-temperature) and F_ERR (over-current). On-chip thermal Shutdown (TSD) and current limit (C_ILIM) will be activated to protect the device from over-temperature or over-current state. The F_OTG is activated when the temperature of the device is higher than 140°C. The F_ERR is activated when the active current is higher than the programmed C_ILIM setting. Once activated, these faults cause the controller to automatically stop switching, latch-off the device, and turn-off the output.

The BQ24160ARGER is ideally suited for controlling single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery charging applications. With its on-chip power MOSFET, reverse current protection, over-voltage protection, and other features, it is an ideal solution for products requiring low RDS(ON) power MOSFETs, low power dissipation, and reliable charging of Li-Ion/Li-Polymer batteries.
