1. Describe

The BQ24193RGET is a highly integrated switch-mode battery charge management and system power path management device for single-cell Li-Ion and Li-polymer batteries in a variety of tablets and other portable devices. Its low-impedance power path optimizes switch-mode operation efficiency, reducing battery charging time and extending battery life during the discharge phase. The I2C serial interface with charging and system setup capabilities makes this device a truly flexible solution. The device supports a variety of input sources, including standard USB host ports, USB charging ports, and high-power DC adapters. The BQ24193RGET gets results from detection circuits in a system, such as a USB PHY device. The BQ24193RGET complies with the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 power specifications with input current and voltage regulation. At the same time, the BQ24193RGET meets the USB On-the-Go operation power rating specification by supplying 5 V on VBUS and providing a current limit of up to 1.3 A. Power path management regulates the system slightly above the battery voltage but does not drop below the minimum system voltage of 3.5 V (programmable). With this feature, the system can keep running even when the battery is completely drained or removed. When the input current limit or voltage limit is reached, power path management automatically reduces the charge current to zero. As the system load continues to increase, the power path discharges the battery until the system power requirements are met. This supplemental mode operation prevents overloading of the input source. The device boots up and completes a charge cycle without software control. It automatically detects the battery voltage and charges the battery in three stages: precharge, constant current and constant voltage. At the end of the charge cycle, the charger automatically terminates when the charge current falls below the preset limit of the constant voltage stage. When a fully charged battery falls below the charge threshold, the charger will automatically begin another charge cycle. The device provides various safety features for battery charging and system operation, including dual negative thermistor monitoring, charge safety timer, and overvoltage/overcurrent protection. The BQ24193RGET also supports JEITA guidelines compliant temperature profiles. Thermal regulation reduces charge current when the junction temperature exceeds 120°C (programmable). The STAT output reports charging status and any fault conditions. The PG output in the bq24193 indicates whether a good power supply is present. In the event of a failure, INT notifies the host immediately. The bq24193 is available in a 24-pin, 4.00 x 4.00 mm2 thin VQFN package.

5. Application Information

A typical application consists of a device configured as I2C controlled power path management device and a Single-cell Li-Ion battery charger for single-cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries for a variety of tablets and other portable devices. It integrates an input reverse blocking FET (RBFET, Q1), high-side switching FET (HSFET, Q2), low-side switching FET (LSFET, Q3), and BATFET (Q4) between the system and battery. The device also integrates a bootstrap diode for the high-side gate drive.
