Thyristors - TRIACs
A Triac is a solid state device which acts like a switch that can be triggered by applying a current of either polarity between two of its three terminals. These devices are commonly known as Thyristors, and the BT137S-600G Triac is no exception. It is a general-purpose Triac, capable of controlling low-to-medium power AC loads in a wide variety of applications.

The BT137S-600G Triac is commonly used for phase control applications in lighting, motor speed control, heating and cooling systems, phase angle control, and similar applications. It can be used with light loads such as miniatures, relays, small motors, and lamp ballast. As it can stand up to 600 volts, it is also suitable for controlling small to medium size motors, lamps, and AC power outlets. Its on-state voltage drop is quite low, meaning that it can operate in high heat environments making it an ideal choice for use in ovens and air-conditioners.
The BT137S-600G Triac is also suitable for use in consumer electronics such as heating pads, irons, toasters, microwave ovens and such.
Working Principle
The BT137S-600G Triac is effectively a bidirectional high-current switch that is triggered by applying a current of either polarity between its two internal terminals. When this current reaches a certain threshold level, called the “gate current”, the Triac will switch on and will remain on until the current between the two terminals drops below a certain level, the “holding current”. This allows the Triac to be “gated” on and off quickly and efficiently, providing fast and smooth control of the AC load.
A Triac is related to an SCR (silicon controlled rectifier), but it has two SCRs in a single package. It is a four-layer device consisting of two SCRs connected in anti-series, with a common Gate connection. When the Gate receives a current signal, the voltage between the Anode and Cathode terminals becomes sufficiently high to trigger the device on. This allows current to flow from both directions through the Triac, creating a nearly continuous output, allowing for the precise control of AC voltages and currents.
The BT137S-600G Triac is also a “Snubberless” Triac, meaning that it can be switched on and off quickly and efficiently with much less energy consumption than standard Triacs, making it an ideal choice for certain applications.
The BT137S-600G Triac is an excellent choice for applications such as AC power outlets, motor speed control, heating and cooling systems, and other low-power and medium-load applications. Its good on-state voltage drop and snubberless operation make it a great choice for these applications.
