Thyristors, which have been found to have extensive application in precision power control circuits, are the most critical components of power electronics. The BT139-600-0Q TRIAC is one of the most promising advances in thyristor technology. This device offers reliable overvoltage and surge protection, excellent thermal balance and performance, and can be used in a wide variety of circuit designs.

Triac is a three-terminal device (anode, cathode and gate) which operates as a bidirectional switch. It consists of two analogous thyristors in parallel but with opposite polarity, coupled with a main gate. Triacs are available with ratings from 0.8 amps up to 600 amps and voltage ratings from 200V to 600V. The main feature of a triac is its ability to conduct current from gate in both directions when triggered by a gate signal. When gate-triggering voltage is bias-inverted, the two thyristors conducting forward current turn off, and the two thyristors conducting in the reverse direction turn on so that the current flows in the opposite direction. The BT139-600-0Q is a 600V, 600A intelligent thyristor integrated circuit, designed with advanced MOSFET technology. It provides superior thermal balance, low RMS and peak on-state resistance, fast turn-on and turn-off times, and a low temperature coefficient.

The BT139-600-0Q is most commonly used in motor and lighting control, heating and other heavy-duty power associated applications. Due to its high power rating coupled with a low on-state resistance, the BT139-600-0Q also works well as a gate source in thyristor-switched circuits. It has one of the highest surge capability ratings available in the TRIAC family and is suitable for line filtering in 10 kHz to 200 KHz frequency range.

The BT139-600-0Q utilizes a symmetric gate structure which enables it to be triggered symmetrically, allowing it to conduct regardless of the polarity of the gate signal applied to it. This enables the device to operate over a wide range of gate drive voltages. A key feature of this triac is its capability to withstand transient overvoltages up to 600V without damage, making it suitable for use in AC mains applications such as lighting control and motor control.

The main working principle of the BT139-600-0Q is the same as that of a conventional thyristor. When the gate voltage is above the breakover voltage, current flows from the anode to the cathode. When the gate voltage is reversed, the current reverses and flows from the cathode to the anode. The device will remain in this on-state until the current drops below the holding current, at which point the device turns off. The switching speed of the device is very fast, allowing it to be used in precision control circuits. The BT139-600-0Q can also be used as a controllable switch in Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) and Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs).
