Thyristors - TRIACsA TRIAC is a type of thyristor, and a type of current controlled switch. It stands for TRIode for Alternating Current, and it is used to control the flow of current. The BTA201-600E TRIAC is a three-terminal semiconductor switch designed for controlling AC load current up to 600A. It is available in various packages for uses such as: dimmer switch, SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) control, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) control, motor control, as well as industrial machine control and automation.The TRIAC is composed of three PN junctions connected in a diamond like shape. This structure gives it three terminals that are analogous to the base, emitter, and collector of a typical BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor). It has two principal applications: the static one, when used as a switch to control the on/off states of an electrical load, and the dynamic one when used to control intensity variations in an inductive or resistive load application. The basic principle of operation of the TRIAC relies on the use of two thyristors connected in inverse parallel, also known as the \'anti-parallel thyristor\'. When this configuration is combined with two independent gates – the perforated ones in the TRIAC – to control the switches independently, it creates a 4-level structure that can control both positive and negative alternations of the AC voltage. This is what gives the TRIAC extremely helpful features, as it can respond to both a positive and negative gate control current.The first element used in a TRIAC is the bidirectional control PNPN structure of two thyristors, this structure is responsible for enabling the TRIAC to conduct in both directions since it cannot be triggered with just one gate due to the bipolar design. These two thyristors work together in a complementary mode to the TRIAC structure, blocking one half cycle and allowing the other, resulting in low power losses at turn on and turn off.The second main part of a TRIAC is the gate, which is responsible for triggering the control PNPN structure. The gate is a bipolar structure, with ohmic contacts to control the gates current, allowing it to respond to positive and negative gate pulses. When the gate is open and the voltage reaches a certain level, the device is triggered and switches on, allowing current to flow. The current then flows between two terminals and the gate is discharged until the voltage reaches the required trigger level again. The BTA201-600E TRIAC is designed to handle high AC current and features an ECO design with repetitive peak off-state over-voltage, surge stopper and butterfly diode built-in. Two independent MOS gates are used to control the TRIAC current from either polarity side of the AC input phase. It provides high thermal cycling performance and operates with low switching losses for improved system efficiency. The device supports low operating temperature, simple gate control and can be used for various switching applications. It is suitable for use in lighting and industrial automation applications, particularly in HVAC controls.
