Thyristors - TRIACsThyristors are power semiconductor devices used to control larger amounts of current. The thyristor is a four-layer solid state switching device. A TRIAC is a three terminal device that combines the functions of two individual back-to-back thyristors, making it the ideal choice for use in controlling high power, AC applications.The BTA208-600B is a TRIAC from NXP. It is designed for easy operation and general AC power control applications. It offers a breakdown voltage of 600 V, a peak on-state current of 8 A, and a package in standard static sensitive SO-8SMD. The BTA208-600B is configured for zero-cross triggering, making it suitable for use with zero-cross triggered cyclic applications such as solid state relays.The typical application field of the BTA208-600B includes fan speed control, lighting control, lamp dimmers, AC switches, heater control, power supplies, and motor control.The working principle of the BTA208-600B is based on the principle of the thyristor. A thyristor is formed when a small current is allowed to pass through a voltage controlled switch. The control of the current is done by the voltages applied to the gate and the anode. When the voltage at the gate is increased, a current is allowed to pass through and the thyristor is switched on. The current flowing through the thyristor is then regulated. When the current is decreased to a certain level, the thyristor is switched off.In order to achieve this functionality, the BTA208-600B contains two distinct thyristors connected back-to-back, hence the designation TRIAC. The two thyristors are interconnected at their common connection, the gate. By applying a suitable gate voltage, the TRIAC is switched on and remains in the on-state until the anode current decreases to below a certain level.In addition to the FAC, the BTA208-600B includes a Gate circuit, which is used to control the turn-on and turn-off of the device. The Gate is a low resistance when the TRIAC is off and a high resistance when it is on.The BTA208-600B is a robust and reliable device and is suitable for use in a wide range of AC power control applications. It is designed for easy operation and provides a reliable, efficient and cost-effective solution for a variety of power control requirements.
