Thyristors are a type of electronic semiconductor component which exhibits four distinct modes of operation. One of the more predominant types of Thyristors is the TRIAC, which is derived from the phrase “triode for alternating current” and is basically a combination of two SCRs (silicon-controlled rectifiers) in parallel, but with the gate of each SCR connected to the main current path. The most common application of a TRIAC is as a switch in an AC power circuit. The BTA204-800C and 127 are two TRIACs with a vast array of usage in AC power circuits.
The BTA204-800C is an 800V/20A rated RMS, general purpose thyristor. With two semiconductor gates and a main current path, the BTA204-800C is able to control the current flow through an AC power circuit. The BTA204-800C features a trigate design which has better thermal conductivity, and the absence of an internal connecting lead between the gates prevents any build-up of heat. This makes the BTA204-800C is highly suitable for use in applications where a high degree of heat dissipation is desired, such as in general lighting, power supplies, and appliance controls. Additionally, the BTA204-800C is also highly resistant to voltage spikes and has a high surge current carrying capacity.
The 127 is an 800V 25A rated RMS general purpose thyristor manufactured by Vishay Semiconductor. The design of the 127 is nearly identical to that of the BTA204-800C, incorporating two semiconductor gates and a main current path. The 127, however, features a T-shaped main current path which increases its ability to dissipate heat and withstand voltage spikes. As with the BTA204-800C, the 127 is also well suited for use in general lighting, power supplies, and appliance controls. The 127 also has a higher surge current carrying capacity than the BTA204-800C, and is hence a good choice for high-demand applications.
The working principle of TRIACs like the BTA204-800C and 127 is based on the fact that an AC power circuit has two independent current flows, with each flow operating in an opposite direction. When a TRIAC gate conducts, the gate’s semiconductor material and main current path allow current to flow from one of the two currents at a given time. The thyristors can be switched on and off, allowing for precise control over the current flow and hence the power going to the connected components. When the thyristor is switched off, no current flows and the power supply is disconnected. This makes the BTA204-800C and 127 excellent components for switching AC power in various applications.
