A TRIAC (Triode for Alternate Current), also known as a thyristor, is a solid-state component which is used primarily for switching and controlling alternating current (AC), and is derived from the mechanism of two silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs). The BTB12-600CW3G is a TRIAC component that is manufactured by Santak Electric Company and is built for use in different applications that require AC line voltage switching. When initially turned on, the BTB12-600CW3G TRIAC behaves like two back-to-back SCRs (Silicon Controlled Rectifiers). The gates of the SCRs are connected, and each has one leg in each of the two AC terminals. The gate or “G” terminal initiates conduction by alternately triggering the two SCRs. This conduction is maintained until the gate signal is removed due to the latching action of the TRIAC. It is important to note that once the BTB12-600CW3G is triggered, it remains in a “conduction” state until the current flowing through it drops to zero. This is known as the “quench time” and is typically around 1.0A/µS.Applications
