BYV15-TAP Application Field and Working Principle
BYV15-TAP is a single-phase, unidirectional, silicon, fast-acting avalanche-recovery Rectifier DIODE, developed by TO-220AB case with a ceramic insulator terminal. It is designed to provide protection to sensitive electronic equipment.

BYV15-TAP is applicable in many fields that are exposed to over-voltage and lightning strikes, such as industrial and commercial lighting system, electricity generation, power transmission, and communication systems. Working Principle
The BYV15-TAP is a high-performance constant voltage circuit protection device which is able to detect over-voltage and then quickly respond, withstanding step surge up to 95A (1.2/50μs). Its unique working principle is based on the rapid avalanche breakdown of the diode. In normal working conditions, the diode is in a reverse-biased state and behaves like an open circuit, allowing no current to flow. However, when a high voltage is applied to the diode, it goes into the reverse breakdown or "avalanche" region, the voltage-current characteristics become nonlinear with the resistance decreases rapidly and the current flows through the diode.
When an over-voltage event is detected, the BYV15-TAP diode closes the circuit and conducts current, guiding the high voltage away from sensitive equipment. After the voltage surge has been diverted, the diode switches back to the reverse-biased state, preventing further damage. The diode’s fast response time enables it to protect sensitive components from the destructive effects of voltage surges.
