A diode commonly referred to as a BYV28-600-TR is an electrical component made of a semiconductor material that is used to control the flow of current. It has a single terminal for both an anode and a cathode, and it allows electricity to flow in one direction only. A diode works as an electrical valve that allows electric current to flow through it only in the direction from anode to cathode. When reversed, it acts as an insulator and does not allow electric current to pass. In the case of a BYV28-600-TR diode, this diode is a single, 600 V rated rectifier. When forward biased, the diode operates like a closed switch, allowing current to flow freely. When the diode is reversed biased, meaning the anode has a negative potential relative to the cathode, it operates like an open switch and does not allow any current to pass. By alternating the potential across the diode, the output current is a series of half waves, which is then smoothed out by a filter capacitor or inductor.
