Diodes - Zener - SingleThe BZG05C39-HM3-18 is a single zener diode designed for use in low voltage circuit applications. It is a small surface mount diode with a maximum voltage rating of 18V, a power dissipation of 100mW and an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Zener diodes are used in low voltage circuits to regulate voltage and provide protection against over-voltage or voltage spikes. The BZG05C39-HM3-18 is ideal for use in power supplies, signal conditioning, audio and video equipment, automotive electronics, computers and telecommunications equipment.Zener diodes are a form of semiconductor device and are also referred to as a voltage regulator diode. As with all diodes they have an anode and a cathode connection with the anode being the positive lead and the cathode the negative lead. This process of reverse breakdown is known as avalanche breakdown, and during this process the current is not in direct proportion to the applied voltage but is limited by the diode due to the Zener effect. This behaviour allows the diode to operate as a voltage regulator, and allows current to flow in one direction only.As the voltage across the diode is increased to its zener voltage, the current conducted is limited and the voltage remains relatively constant. The BZG05C39-HM3-18 has a zener voltage of 18V, and the voltage across the diode will remain at a constant level at or below this voltage. This is known as the zener effect, and is the main feature of zener diodes.
