The BZT03C160-TAP consists of two parts, the Bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (BTVS) and the embedded Avalanche Protection Diode (APD). It effectively derives the protected system voltage to an acceptable safe level when a transient event occurs usually in less than 1ns. The APD protects against voltage spikes by allowing a low impedance path for current flow. The APD allows current to flow either in the forward or reverse direction when the voltage across the device exceeds the breakout voltage, helping reduce the clamping voltage across the device.

To ensure high reliability, the BTVS is integrated with a reverse leakage current protection function and the control of peak pulse power is through its capacitive integration. The BTVS also has the ability to limit the peak pulse power to some predefined value with an adjustable delay time.
