TVS – Diodes (Transient Voltage Suppressor – Diodes) are devices that can protect individuals and other components from overvoltage spikes and electrical transients. BZT03D30-TAP Application Field and Working Principle

The BZT03D30-TAP is a small and compact (< 0.4” x 0.2”) TVS Diode from Littelfuse. This device offers high-speed protection against transient over voltages up to 30V and its operating temperature range is from -55°C to +125°C. The BZT03D30-TAP is suitable for a variety of applications, such as automobiles, consumer products, industrial equipment, and power management systems.

The working principle of the BZT03D30-TAP is based on the principle of the Avalanche effect. When overvoltage occurs on an electrical circuit, the BZT03D30-TAP switches on and breaks the path of current, as its avalanche breakdown voltage is lower than the applied voltage. This prevents the current from flowing further and thus, potentially damaging elements in the circuit. As soon as the applied over voltage reduces bellow the breakdown point of the diode, the BZT03D30-TAP switches itself off again, resuming its normal working condition.

A key feature of the BZT03D30-TAP is that it provides a high clamping voltage and has an ultra-low leakage current. The clamping voltage limits the peak transient voltage by providing a reverse blocking capability. This helps to keep the voltage within the limits that it can withstand. The leakage current helps to ensure that there is no current flowing between the power source and ground when the diode is turned off.
