BZV55C2V4 Working Principle

The working principle of the BZV55C2V4 is based on the PN Junction. A PN Junction is a device made of semiconductor material which does not, in itself, carry a current. Instead, when an electric field is applied to it, current can flow through it. The PN Junction operates as a diode, allowing current to flow in only one direction. When a current is applied to the PN Junction from the anode side the minority carrier’s slow movement to the P-type material produces a built-in field and reduces the PN junction barrier. The BZV55C2V4 is constructed using a PN Junction which allows it to handle higher reverse voltages.

The Zener diode is connected in reverse bias in the circuit so that it experiences a reverse electric potential relative to its anode. This causes electrons to move from the anode side to the cathode side to create an electric field across the PN Junction. When the applied reverse voltage reaches the zener voltage, the electric field across the junction becomes strong enough to cause a breakdown. As an electric current is applied, the barrier between the regions breaks down and allows electrons from the anode to cross over to the cathode side, forming a junction.

This junction enables current flow in both directions, but only with a greater magnitude in the forward direction. This is because the valance band in the P-type material is much narrower than the conduction band in the N-type material, thereby providing a greater conduction current along the reverse bias region to suppress reverse current flow. The ratio of the forward current to the reverse current is known as the Zener Impedance. The BZV55C2V4 Zener diode can regulate voltage in a circuit because its Zener Impedance remains constant at higher reverse voltage levels.
