They are simple electrical devices that allow current to flow in one direction, while inhibiting the flow in the opposite direction. Zener diodes are a specific type of diode which allow current to flow in the reverse direction, under the certain voltage ratings, with no harm in the device. The BZV55C30 is a single component, small package, silicon planar power Zener diode, with an RC network built inside, that function as a transient voltage suppressor. It has an operating temperature range from -65°C to +200°C, a breakout voltage of 33V, a thermal resistance of 165°C/W, a maximum power dissipation of 500mW, and are mostly manufactured in the DO-41 package, although some units are also provided in the SOD-123 package.

These Zener diodes work on the principle of reverse-blocking; when not conducting, they appear just like an insulator protecting two circuits from being connected, yet, when a certain voltage rating is reached, they allow most of the current to flow, straight from the cathode to the anode, creating a low-resistance path for the current, reducing the voltage levels and taking the voltage spike away.

In some cases, the BZV55C30 can be used with a series resistor; this resistor being connected to the anode, which decreases the voltage levels reaching the device and limits the current flux.
