Diodes are unavoidable components in most electronic devices and circuits. They are simple electrical devices that allow current to flow in one direction, while inhibiting the flow in the opposite direction. Zener diodes are a specific type of diode which allow current to flow in the reverse direction, under the certain voltage ratings, with no harm in the device. The BZV55C30 is the Zener diode type within the BZV55 family, with a 30V rating, and is widely used in multiple fields and applications requiring this specific type.
The BZV55C30 is a single component, small package, silicon planar power Zener diode, with an RC network built inside, that function as a transient voltage suppressor. It has an operating temperature range from -65°C to +200°C, a breakout voltage of 33V, a thermal resistance of 165°C/W, a maximum power dissipation of 500mW, and are mostly manufactured in the DO-41 package, although some units are also provided in the SOD-123 package.
These particular characteristics make the BZV55C30 suitable for multiple applications, becoming a very popular option in an extended range of applications. As a protection component, it is widely used in many circuits, sometimes in combination with other components, such as transistors, capacitors and resistors, in order to protect an electronic equipment from overvoltage, providing also a high degree of safety. Other applications include satellite, automotive and military technology, power supplies, as a clamping device, a voltage regulator, for switching, rectifying and discriminating signals, for EMC compliance, for reverse power protection, for power line communication and overvoltage protection, among others.
The BZV55C30 is able to withstand transient voltage spikes of up to 1,500W peak power, and can be tailored to any required voltage ranging from 5.1V to 68V, by selectively pairing appropriate Zener diodes, with a maximum reverse breakdown voltage equal to the forward voltage of the pair; these multiple configurations being useful depending on the particular application.
These Zener diodes work on the principle of reverse-blocking; when not conducting, they appear just like an insulator protecting two circuits from being connected, yet, when a certain voltage rating is reached, they allow most of the current to flow, straight from the cathode to the anode, creating a low-resistance path for the current, reducing the voltage levels and taking the voltage spike away.
In some cases, the BZV55C30 can be used with a series resistor; this resistor being connected to the anode, which decreases the voltage levels reaching the device and limits the current flux.
The BZV55C30 provides a safe alternative to more common devices, as it is designed to generate much higher overvoltage and low leakage current thresholds than ordinary components; high-reliability applications requiring long-term safety, depending on their particular operating parameters and requirements, can benefit from the use of the BZV55C30.
