TVS - Diodes
Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes are specially designed two-terminal semiconductor devices designed to provide protection against high voltage transients. TVSs are widely used to protect semiconductor circuits and components from damage due to electrical overstress, caused by surges in power, such as lightning strikes, electrostatic discharge (ESD), overvoltage, and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
BZW04-33HR1G Application Field and Working Principle
The BZW04-33HR1G is a low breakdown voltage, very small size (SOD-523 package) and ultra-low capacitance TVS diode and is designed for protection of data lines in digital security systems, automotive applications, industrial, and commercial equipment. It provides protection by clamping action that restricts voltage transients to a safe level. The BZW04-33HR1G has a uni-directional protection and is designed for applications where a non-control flow of current is present. It provides a guaranteed working voltage of 5V (VRWM) and a very low maximum clamping voltage of 11.8V (VCWM).
The working principle of the BZW04-33HR1G is based on the principle of avalanche breakdown. When a high voltage transient is applied to the device, it creates an avalanche of electrons in the junction of the diode, which reduces the high voltage and reduces the energy dissipated during the event. This avalanche of electrons results in a very low impedance path which shortens the duration of the transient event. The device then returns back to its normal state after the transient is over.
The BZW04-33HR1G provides low capacitance performance, ESD immunity greater than 30 kV contact and 15 kV air discharge, in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2, and fast response time of typically 1.0ns for a 10V voltage transient on a 50 ohms transmission line. This makes it ideal for protecting sensitive electronic devices from high-speed/low-power ESD, lightning, and overvoltage glitches.
The BZW04-33HR1G device can be used in several application areas such as: computer peripherals, industrial and automotive control systems, domestic appliances, consumer electronics, communication equipment, personal computers, digital cameras, and security systems.
