The TVS diodes (Transient Voltage Suppressors) is a device designed to protect voltage sensitive components from high voltage transients such as electrostatic discharge (ESD), other temporary over voltage spikes, and power surges from lightning or AC line. The TVS diode is then designed to discharge the stored energy in the process of circuit conductivity.The basic elements in the design of the BZW50-12B are:

  • The Zener section
  • Lead inductance

The avalanche diode works by creating a conductive path when the reverse breakdown voltage is reached, allowing the current to flow without damage. The clamp then functions to reduce the surge current and limit the peak magnitude. The Zener section works to absorb the excess energy in order to protect the avalanche diode. Finally, the lead inductance works to reduce the high frequency components of the transient energy, which otherwise causes malfunction in the circuits.
