TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are used to protect electronic circuits from damage due to voltage transients (spikes) or waveforms that exceed a specified voltage or become too long. BZW50 series diode is one of the most common and widely used TVS diodes. This article will discuss the application field and working principle of BZW50-82.
Applications
BZW50-82 is primarily used to protect devices from voltage spikes and surges, such as the effects of lightning strikes. Working Principle
BZW50-82 consists of a two-terminal diode–resistor junction, which is reverse-biased in operation. This diode–resistor junction creates a breakdown voltage (VBR), which limits the maximum voltage that can be applied across the terminals. When an over-voltage transient occurs, the diode–resistor junction rapidly conducts the excessive circulating current and limits the voltage by dissipating it as heat in the resistor. This reduces the voltage to an acceptable level and isolates the electrical circuit from the transient.
BZW50-82 also provides fast response time, which helps to absorb short-duration voltage transients. The current-handling capacity of a diode is determined by its maximum voltage rating (VTM). When a transient exceeds the maximum rated voltage (VTM) of the diode, a large current will flow through the diode and cause it to fail. To prevent this, the VTM must always be greater than the peak voltage rating of the application.
Finally, BZW50-82 has excellent temperature stability and spike energy consideration. Its thermal tolerance range is -40~125℃, which is suitable for protecting electronic circuits that operate in extreme temperatures. The spike energy (Ipp) of the diode is the amount of energy that it can absorb, and the higher the Ipp the better the protection.
