One of the most specialized multichannel switch ICs for high speed data applications is the CD74AC257MG4. CD74AC257MG4 Overview

CD74AC257MG4 is four channel CMOS multiplexer/demultiplexer which is ideal for use in low-voltage high-speed digital data applications. It is designed with separate outputs for each channel, so that data can flow from a single input (or multiple inputs) to different destinations. The CD74AC257MG4 is available in an 8-pin SOIC package and operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply. All the input and output pins are compatible with CMOS and both TTL logic. It provides overvoltage protection on all inputs and allows a wide input range of up to 6V without harmful leakage currents.

CD74AC257MG4 Working Principle

CD74AC257MG4 is mainly composed of four independent 4-channel multiplexers/demultiplexers. Each of the channels has a common control input (select line) and four data inputs and four corresponding data outputs. The control input allows the cascade or group connection of the multiplexers or demultiplexers. The control signals are of type "active low". When the select inputs are ‘high’, all outputs of the selected multiplexer/demultiplexer will be ‘low’; when the select inputs are ‘low’, the selected multiplexer/demultiplexer will have its data input connected to the corresponding data output.

The CD74AC257MG4 has two enable inputs, EN1 and EN2, both of which must be HIGH (unconnected) for normal operation and for data to be transferred. If EN1 is driven LOW and EN2 is HIGH, only the first two multiplexers/demultiplexers will be enabled. Similarly, if EN1 is High and EN2 is driven LOW, only the last two multiplexers/demultiplexers will be enabled. When both EN1 and EN2 inputs are LOW all channels are disabled.
