The CD74HC191MG4 is a 4-bit synchronous up/down counter from the 74HC logic family which is a CMOS logic IC, providing high speed and low power dissipation along with extended reliability. This IC is capable of applying asynchronous parallel load inputs with enable and direction control outputs along with synchronous enable clear and clock inputs. Due to their features, the CD74HC191MG4 counters are the most commonly used in the logic-counter, divider field.
The 74HC family is designed with a 6-folds symmetrical speed graph and comprises several integrated chip architectures. Additionally, the advantages of this family are high speed, low power consumption, and immunity to power supply failures. The 16-pin PDIP package of the IC enables it to be used in a variety of clock, counting and control applications where upgrade of low power is needed.
The CD74HC191MG4 consists of 4 JK type flip-flops which are connected in a closed loop to form a synchronous up/down counter. The working of the device can be categorized into three parts, namely, counting, resetting and loading. The device can be used to count from 0 to 15, which is a decimal value.
The counting is done depending on the UP/DOWN mode selection control. Counting of the device continues until it reaches the 15th count value, at which point it resets and starts from 0 again. An asynchronous clear terminal CLR is provided to reset the count value to 0. This terminal can also be connected to an active low logic level to further reset the counter to a predetermined value.
The two parallel asynchronous data inputs, D0 and D1, can be used to load a new count in the device. The enabling of this loading process is done using the Load Enable terminal LE by supplying an active low logic level.
The terminal CP is used to provide the clock signal that is used to count or reset the counter. The Clock Enable terminal CE is used to enable or disable the application of CP signal. An active low logic level is used to enable the CP, while a high logic level is used to disable the CP.
The device has two outputs, Q0 and Q1, which can be used for controlling the direction of the count. The Q0 output is active high when the count is in the UP mode and is low when the count is in the DOWN mode. Similarly, the Q1 output is low in the UP mode and high in the DOWN mode.
The IC is widely used in logic-counter and divider fields because of its multiple features such as UP/DOWN mode control, parallel load, and reset abilities. This makes it the ideal choice for applications where both speed and reliability are required.
