CD74HC4017M Working Principle:
The working principle of the CD74HC4017M is based on the Johnson counter topology. It is a four-stage divide-by-10 Johnson counter. It consists of four D-type flip-flops (Figure 2). Each flip-flop has two outputs – Q and Q-bar. When the input clock signal is applied, the flip-flops sequentially toggle their outputs.
When the clock signal is applied to the clock input, the outputs of the flip-flops will sequentially toggle from low to high and then cycle back to low again. The output of the last flip-flop is connected to the reset input of the first flip-flop, thus completing one cycle of the count. This process will be repeated as long as there is a clock signal applied to the clock input.
The outputs of the CD74HC4017M can be used to drive external devices such as LEDs or other logic circuits or to generate signals to be used in applications such as frequency division, timing and pulse generation.
