TVS diodes provide lightning protection and also transient surge protection for circuits and components. A TVS diode can replace a zener diode or a crowbar circuit for transient protection, providing improved response time (around 10 nanoseconds) and performance over these alternatives. TVS diodes are constructed with a semiconductor junction junction that provides them with the ability to clamp voltage transients to a safe voltage level. The CDNBS08-T12C Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) Diode is a product from Diodes Incorporated and is suitable for applications used in various industries.

CDNBS08-T12C Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) Diode is an ultra low capacitance diode in SOT. It is a four-line ultra-low capacitance ESD suppressor designed for ESD protection of I/O ports in electronic devices, such as laptop computers and other portable electronic devices. The CDNBS08-T12C features a maximum clamping voltage of 12.5 V, a peak pulse power dissipation of 250 W, and a typical capacitance of only 0.2 pF.

The CDNBS08-T12C Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) Diode has a typical working principle that involves a reverse-biased p-n junction, a zener diode and an avalanche diode. The reverse-biased junction is exposed to the transients and is able to quickly draw the transient energy away from the circuit. The zener diode works in conjunction with the reverse-biased junction to further reduce the voltage. As the transient voltage increases, the zener diode becomes forward-biased and clamps the transient voltage at its break-down voltage. Finally, the avalanche diode comes into play when the transient voltage exceeds the break-down voltage of the zener diode. The avalanche diode is characterized by a very sharp positive resistance-voltage (VR) curve. This spike of voltage causes the transient to increase exponentially until it reaches its maximum or peak voltage. At the peak voltage level the transient energy is dissipated and the circuit is protected from any harm.

The CDNBS08-T12C Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) Diode is designed mainly for the protection of data and signal lines in data and communication lines in general such as USB, HDMI, and Ethernet. Boards using the CDNBS08-T12C are protected against electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), cable discharge events (CDE), and surge. The CDNBS08-T12C series is also ideal for use in applications such as barcode scanners, medical imaging equipment, cell phones, computers, and automotive system interfaces.
