Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are safety devices contrived to protect electronic equipment from high voltage transients. They are the most common form of surge protection and they function by controlling the flow of electricity between two terminals or points. In a basic application, the arrester is inserted between the power input and the device to be protected. A variety of surge and peak scenarios can be triggered by lightning or other phenomena, and the mechanism of an arrester allows for the resulting energy to be dissipated without damaging either the device connected to the arrester or the arrester itself. One of the most reliable types of GDT arrester on the market is the CG2350LS. The CG2350LS arrester utilizes unique multi-strike capability to effectively suppress different wave forms of high voltage transients, including repetition. This capability provides unparalleled protection against surge events with reduced risk of nuisance tripping. The device is rated 440 Volts peak-to-ground (100 volts peak-to-peak) or 830 volts peak-to-ground (200 volts peak-to-peak) and 3 fiberglass elements are arranged in parallel/series configuration. This allows the device to operate both as a voltage dependent or current dependent arrester. The structure of the CG2350LS arrester operates by maintaining healthy voltage level when no abnormally high voltage is present. In the event of a surge, the coupler of the arrester changes its state and current flows through the arrester to the ground pathway. The coupler functions as a bipolar TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diode and utilizes its bidirectional protective circuitry to shift voltage between the input and output terminals in the event of a voltage surge. The current is then dissipated in the form of heat, and the excess voltage is dissipated in the form of light.The protection provided by the CG2350LS arrester is not only due to its mechanical construction, but to its functional formulation of capacitance, inductance and resistance. The working principle is determined by a combination of the total capacitance between the anode and cathode, the inductance of the two fiberglass elements and the resistance of the arrester cores. This ensures that if a voltage spike does occur, the spike is controlled by the arrester and maintains the maximum allowable voltage at the terminal.In addition, the device provides additional protection against repetitive transients. This is enabled by the unique series/parallel configuration of the arrester elements. The series/parallel configuration ensures that the arrester bypasses high energy repetitive surges and it can do this efficiently for up to 1000 times before any component needs to be replaced. The device also ensures latency time is kept to a minimum due to the increased number of discharges.The CG2350LS is a universal arrester and is suitable for a variety of different applications. It can be used to protect a variety of equipment, including high-end telecom and power equipment, protection of communication circuits or power grids, as well as the railway and marine industries. Furthermore, the device is UL 1449 certified and is tested using lightning and service conditions, which guarantees a long lasting and effective protection solution.
