CHL8314 is a monolithic integrated circuit from the RF Microelectronics Solutions (RFPMS) family, produced by Siliconix. This device is specially designed for domestic low power (1.2W) switching supplies with minimal external components.
The CHL8314-02CRT is a quasi-resonant controller IC specifically designed to optimize the system performance of low power buck and flyback switch-mode power supplies (SMPSs) with the use of low total external component count, including small magnetics. This device is designed to be highly efficient, using a quasi-resonant cycle to reduce switching losses, while at the same time providing good EMI performances.
Application Field
The CHL8314-02CRT can be used in many applications, such as: desktop computers, notebooks, ATX, power over Ethernet (PoE) switches, set-top boxes, game consoles, and 5V/3.3V logic power supplies.
In those applications the CHL8314-02CRT can operate in a wide input voltage range from 4.75V up to 65V, making it suitable for a large variety of power sources from wall adapters to industrial batteries.
This IC is also a very efficient device, being able to switch at up to 300kHz, thus allowing for the use of small magnetics for the power conversion process in order to reduce the necessary board space.
Working Principle
The CHL8314-02CRT operates in a quasi-resonant mode, meaning that it reduces the switching losses and improves the EMI performances. To achieve this, the controller uses a burst mode with Softness control.
The power conversion process of the CHL8314-02CRT operates in a three-step process, as described below:
1. Soft Start: when the EN pin is initially turned on, the device enters a Soft Start period, where the Q gate voltage is biased with a ramp signal. In this way, the power MOSFET is ramped up slowly from zero current to a set target current.
2. Transient Mode: during this mode, the device is operated in a Pulse-Frequency Modulation (PFM) manner, meaning that it is alternately switching the power MOSFET from ON to OFF states. This helps in optimizing the efficiency and EMI.
3. Continuous Mode: in this stage, the modulation of the power MOSFET is then switched to Continuous-Conduction Mode (CCM). In this mode, the core inductor is kept continually energized, thus avoiding zero-crossing discontinuities, which would lead to EMI problems.
Additionally, the CHL8314-02CRT also features an over-current protection, an over-voltage protection and an under-voltage lockout. Moreover, the device provides an adjustable soft shutdown function, allowing the user to configure the current limits and to choose the desired steady-state switching frequency.
In summary, the CHL8314-02CRT is a very compact and efficient IC, specially designed for low power offline SMPS applications. This device offers a high degree of flexibility, being able to operate in a wide input voltage range, while at the same time providing an excellent performance thanks to its quasi-resonant mode.
