CHL8328-28CRT voltage regulator uses a three-transistor forward converter structure to achieve a high output current capability and a wide operating range. It uses an input voltage range from 4.5V to 18V and a regulated output voltage range from 0.8V to 3.3V to support a sweep of load conditions.The IC is composed of a bi-directional error amplifier, a voltage reference, a N-channel MOSFET and two Schottky diodes. The three-transistor forward converter uses the N-channel MOSFET to control power flow. The MOSFET is enabled/disabled by a control signal generated on-chip, which controls the current through the inductor. When the MOSFET is enabled, stored energy in the primary winding current charges the output capacitor, generating the regulated output voltage. When the MOSFET is disabled, the stored energy in the inductor is released, which is then converted to output current.The operation of the CHL8328-28CRT is monitored and adjusted by an internal feedback loop. The error signal is generated by the differential amplifier, which compares the internal reference voltage (1.212V) to the output voltage and produces an error signal based on the difference between the two. If the output voltage is different from the internal reference voltage then it causes the error. The error signal is then used to control the duty cycle to regulate the output voltage. The duty cycle is calculated by the controller using voltage information from the load and the feedback.Conclusion
