Although most people are unfamiliar with specifically how it works, the CQ220I-6MS is an important piece of equipment to many industries. A type of thyristor, more specifically a TRIAC (triode for alternating current), the device regulates the flow of AC current in these applications. For example, it can be used to control the dim level of a light in home automation or determine the speed of a fan motor in an industrial space.

The CQ220I-6MS acts as a type of PCL (phase control logic) for AC power. The three terminals of the TRIAC, known as the gate, main land, and main two, interact with electric signals to control how much current can flow through it. This is often achieved through a form of switching called phase angle control, which involves delaying the enabling of the gate from when the AC power begins its phase. Typically, the phase angle is less than 180 degrees. The angle determines the amount of average current that is split between the main and gate terminals. By controlling the angle, the TRIAC can precisely limit the amount of current that activates the load.

In this way, the CQ220I-6MS can act as a sort of remote switch, staying “on” as long as the electric signal continues. This makes it ideal for applications when the load needs to remain on, even after the initiating signal has been interrupted. The remote switch can also be used as a sort of circuit breaker, cutting power to the AC load when the need arises.

This remote switch also works with zero crossover technology. When enabled, the TRIAC can stay on until the electric signal crosses the zero mark. This ensures that the load is not affected unless the signal passes through the zero, minimizing the risk of an AC overload. This technology can also enable devices to be on and off more efficiently, as TRIACs can easily detect when the signal crosses the zero.

Of course, the CQ220I-6MS also has its limits in terms of the amount of current it can handle. It can handle up to 4A of RMS current with a voltage of 400V AC, making it ideal for many smaller applications. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the device will shut down if the current and voltage exceed those parameters. As such, it’s important to match the device to the application before using it, especially in industrial settings.

The CQ220I-6MS is an invaluable tool in many applications. By controlling the amount of current that flows to the load, the TRIAC ensures that machines and appliances run properly, even when the electric signals vary. With its PCL and zero crossover capabilities, the device allows for more efficient remote switching.
