Working Principle

The way it works is that when the forward voltage is applied, the SCR will conduct current until the current is reduced below the holding current level. Once the current falls below the holding current level, the SCR will regain its blocking capability.

When the reverse voltage is applied, the SCR will block the current, until the reverse voltage is removed and the forward voltage is reapplied. This principle makes the SCR useful for applications such as motor speed control, where the circuit requires the current to be modulated.
