Thyristors – TRIACs
A TRIAC, or a Triode for Alternating Current, is a three-terminal semiconductor device that is used for controlling electrical power. It is a two-terminal device, with a gate (G) and main terminal (M), and a main terminal 1 (MT1) and main terminal 2 (MT2). It is able to control AC voltage and current by controlling the gate voltage. TRIACs are commonly used as switches, for controlling AC heating systems, for dimming lights and for controlling motors.
