A triac is a type of thyristor which is essentially an AC version of the SCR, designed to control voltage on either side of its gate in a bi-directional way. CTA08-1200B operates according to segment control theory, a miscellaneous drive theory created during the age of microprocessor revolution. At a given time, the gate circuit is triggered with a pulse and current will flow in the junction between the gate and main terminal. The main terminal voltage of CTA08-1200B is high enough to trigger it. It will then turn on the power switch and send out current to the load.

Unlike electojets, once the CTA08-1200B thyristor is triggered, the current through its main terminal will always make a half cycle flow. This can be observed by testing with an oscilloscope when its gate triggers the device. It will remain on even if its gate voltage is removed.
