TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) diodes are used in applications where protection of circuitry from electrical surges is required. The D1213A-04SO-7 is a unidirectional, bidirectional, or combination voltage device designed to protect sensitive electronic circuits against voltage transients induced by lightning and other transient voltage events. TVS devices offer a higher level of protection than traditional components due to their higher current handling capability and their ability to protect against larger voltages.

A TVS diode is effectively two devices in one – a fast acting clamp on one side, and a series protection device on the other. The clamp, often referred to as a shunt device, is composed of a conductive channel and along with a Zener diode, it forms an avalanche breakdown device. The series protection device is composed of a reversed-biased junction diode, which becomes conductive when the current exceeds its peak pulse power rating. When the surge current attempts to strike the protected circuit, the TVS diode quickly clamps it, generating a voltage spike along with a sudden change in the current flow.

A great strength of the D1213A-04SO-7, compared to traditional components, is it’s ability to reduce total system components up to 25% when used as a direct replacement to the traditional systems complemented with ESD suppressors. This is possible due to it’s bidirectional protection, with reverse stand-off voltage up to 8V. The device also offers a high peak pulse current rating of 27A (10/1000 μs), high peak power of 1.1KW, excellent clamping characteristics and fast response time.

The D1213A-04SO-7 is also capable of handling AC applications with a high peak surge current of up to 40A. The device also offers an exceptionally low leakage current, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. The device is protected against electrostatic discharges (ESD) and is compliant to the IEC 61000-4-2 standard (air discharge – 15kV; contact discharge – 8kV).

It is widely used in articles such as cellular phones, digital audio/video equipment, communication equipment, home module controls, automotive accessories, medical electronics, sensor systems, industrial control and semiconductor production test equipment where high level ESD protection is required.
