The DC1562A-C is an evaluation and demonstration board and kit from Linear Technology, providing components for a single−cell lithium battery charger with a high−performance buck−boost DC−DC converter that can maintain a constant input or output voltage. The DC1562A-C features an array of application fields and is composed of a buck-boost converter, digital rotary encoder, graphic LCD, controller, battery charger and interfaces all integrated on a single PCB. It is designed to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of a desktop or notebook battery charger application and to understand its relationship with a buck-boost DC-DC converter. The DC1562A-C provides an ideal platform for researching and assessing high-accuracy, multi-output DC/DC regulators, high-efficiency power architecture, and a full-featured 8-bit microcontroller with LCD display, rotary encoder control knob, and programming via a serial port. It is capable of utilizing a wide variety of input sources, such as AC, 5V or USB power supplies, and provides a current-regulated output of up to 9A, from 0.5V to 12V.The DC1562A-C utilizes a constant on-time topology based buck-boost controller which is optimized to minimize both the input current ripple by 1% and the switching frequency variability by 20%. The constant on-time and fixed frequency topology provides low output ripple and fast transient response. It also features input, output, and startup voltage regulation, current regulation, power factor correction, soft start and startup current limit modes. The 8-bit microcontroller utilizes an LCD panel to produce a graphic display of input, output, power, temperature, and protection parameters. Users are expected to use the rotary encoder and the programming buttons to control the functions.The DC1562A-C provides USB 2.0 compliant ports for programming the microcontroller and for communicating with the outputs. The USB ports allow the user to download programs, debug and demonstrate certain features, and adjust various parameters.The DC1562A-C also offers a Battery Charge Management System (BCMS) which is designed specifically for Lithium Ion-based batteries and provides efficient, safe, and reliable charging, discharging, and maintenance of single-cell Li-ion packs. The BCMS ensures a uniform charging current, while regulating the charge termination voltage for optimum performance.The DC1562A-C has a wide range of applications, from desktop/notebook battery chargers, to cellular phones, portable video games, digital cameras, and similar battery-powered devices. It enables the user to easily evaluate components for such applications, and to quickly prototype and optimize the overall system.
