The DC1559A evaluation board is part of a family of DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS solutions that allows engineers to evaluate the performance of offline flyback and forward topologies. The DC1559A evaluation board, which is based on the industry-leading UC3844 PWM IC, provides a convenient platform for evaluating the high-performance capabilities of the associated power stage.
The DC1559A evaluation board consists of a power stage that utilizes an Energy Saver™ control scheme for driving an offline power converter topology, which allows for 80% to 95% efficiency over a wide input voltage range. The SMPS evaluation board also has built-in protection features for input overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent/short-circuit conditions. The DC1559A evaluation board has an input voltage range of 208VAC or 340VAC and an output voltage range of 3.3V to 48V (depending on the choice of transformer).
The working principle behind the DC1559A evaluation board is the use of the UC3844 PWM control IC, which is energized by a voltage divider connected to the input power supply. Once powered, the UC3844 PWM control IC acts as a comparator, comparing the current voltage to the reference voltage that is set by the voltage divider. With each zero-crossing of the AC line voltage, an oscillation is generated that switches the power bridge, which is connected to the output of the DC1559A evaluation board. The frequency of this switching determines the output voltage, current, and efficiency of the power stage.
In order to optimize the performance of the power stage, the DC1559A evaluation board includes a series of optional feedback resistors that allow engineers to tailor the control characteristics. These feedback resistors are connected between the output pins of the UC3844 PWM control IC and the base of the power switch, allowing for a wide range of operating points. Additionally, the DC1559A evaluation board includes an on-board adjustable current sense resistor that can be adjusted to provide improved overcurrent protection. The current sense resistor is also used to improve the overall efficiency of the power stage by reducing the peak current ratings.
The DC1559A evaluation board is designed to provide engineers with a flexible solution for evaluating the performance of offline SMPS designs. In addition to the power stage and feedback resistor options, the board includes a comprehensive set of onboard test points that allow for easy troubleshooting. The DC1559A evaluation board is RoHS compliant and has been successfully tested with both single-ended and isolated power supplies.
