The DC1643A evaluation board from the Texas Instruments is a full featured, easy-to-use source for assessing new DC/DC and AC/DC Switched Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) designs. Along with its convenient size and simple operation, the DC1643A presents researchers the option to practical test their designs about immediately. The DC1643A board provides two level of operation: single output for basic design assessment, and multiple output from a single board for more complicated designs. It has been specially configured to conveniently handle a variety of power supply operations from low power devices such as control systems and digital signal processors to advanced power converters and multi-level AC/DC systems.
The DC1643A evaluation board contains several interesting features which make it stand out from other power supply evaluation boards. First, it is equipped with a low-noise shunt regulator and adjustable current-sense throttling. This allows for precise monitoring of output voltages and current load during operation. Second, it is fitted with a low-power CMOS voltage reference which helps to improve accuracy in high efficiency applications. It uses a DC-link control topology, where the output voltage and current are regulated depending upon the input to output voltages ratio. The DC1643A is a fixed frequency converter, making it suitable for power converters operating at relatively constant frequencies. The DC1643A board has been designed to operate without the need for external components, making it simple to configure and use.
The board features three different operating modes. It can be operated in the classic PFC mode where the output voltage is regulated indirectly via the dc-link voltage. Alternatively, it can be operated in the flux modulated PFC mode. This mode allows for improved power factor and quicker response to load currents than in the classic PFC mode. Finally, the DC1643A can be operated in constant-on-time (COT) mode. This mode offers improved load performance at low power levels and also affords the advantage of a faster transient response.
