DC1668B-A is a high performance evaluation board from Texas Instruments aimed at research and development applications focused on the field of off-line double current (DC/DC and AC/DC) switching mode power supplies (SMPS).

The overall design of the DC1668B-A is meant for linear or quasi-resonant SMPS which uses two large low current MOSFETs to regulate power conversion, providing a better efficiency and a higher power density than conventional switched mode SMPS designs. With its inclusion of digital connectivity, the DC1668B-A can take advantage of the DC and AC power conversion of the new device prototypes. As such, the board is suitable for design verification, fault detection and debugging and component selection for a variety of applications.

At the core of DC1668B-A is its’ field-effect transistor (FET) based power stage, featuring two large low current FETs from New Japan Radio, providing a total power capability of 600 V / 9 A. Adaptor boards for this stage provide the customer with tailored solutions for their applications, such as buck converters, boost converters, half bridge converters and more. With the FET power stage, DC1668B-A is capable of up to 600 W in power output with high efficiency and high transient speed. Plug-in opto-couplers and power modules are also included for more customization.

On the control side, the DC1668B-A board includes a high precision Analog Devices’ shunt regulator together with an on-chip pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller and analog-to-digital (A/D) converter. This combination enables the design engineer to monitor and adjust the output parameters such as output voltage and current in real time manner. By combining the analog and digital features of the DC1668B-A, the user can easily control parameters and enable testing of different power supply type circuits.

In addition to its power conversion capabilities, the DC1668B-A board comes with several other features, such as an integrated Bluetooth transceiver, monitor, temperature probe, and a built-in LCD display. These allow the user to quickly analyze data and debug the system during operations. Moreover, the DC1668B-A includes E2E software which allows full control of the board through a laptop or mobile device.
