DC2143A-B evaluation boards are designed for applications involving isolated DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) switched-mode power supply (SMPS) design. These evaluation boards contain the MCP16251, a monolithic integrated high-voltage switch-mode PWM controller. It is meant to be used in the design of isolated flyback, Forward or Fly-Bucking topologies. The MCP16251 Controller provides true valley current mode control with fixed off-time operation over a wide range of input voltages. It features patented constant frequency off-time valley current (VCO™) control, providing stable operation under all operating conditions. This control method offers fast transient response, high system efficiency and low output ripple. The device also includes an output over voltage protection circuit that disconnects the output voltage up to 85V, providing an extra layer of protection.

The evaluation board is designed to operate in both continuous conduction mode (CCM) or critical conduction mode (CRM) over an input voltage range of 5V to 75V DC. The output voltage is adjustable from 12V to 48V DC. The maximum available output current is 5A while the maximum power output is 120W. The board also includes an external enable control that allows the output power to be disabled for safety.

The MCP16251 includes a wide range of protection features, some of which are highlighted below:

• Shutdown/Soft-Start: When triggered, the shutdown/soft-start signal forces the MCP16251 to enter either shutdown or soft-start mode. This results in high-side MOSFETs being disabled and the inductor current decreasing fast.
• Over Voltage Protection (OVP): When the output voltage of the MCP16251 exceeds a certain level the OVP protection circuit kicks in and shuts off the high side MOSFETs.
• Under Voltage Lockout (UVLO): When the input voltage is below a set voltage level, the MCP16251 will enter a lockout state and disable the high-side MOSFETs.
• Over Current Protection: The MCP16251 can detect an excessive output current and will act accordingly to protect the MOSFETs and power supply.
