The DC2172A from Analog Devices is a highly featured evaluation board that provides a platform for testing and developing synchronous buck (step-down) converters for use in a variety of applications. It features a dual output scheme tailored for use in Point of Load (POL) applications. The DC2172A is a powerful and easy to use design tool that enables engineers to quickly evaluate various configuration options for the synchronous buck regulation solution.
The DC2172A is designed to provide a flexible and simple platform for testing, evaluating and developing synchronous buck (step-down) converters. It features two adjustable voltage outputs that are regulated to within ±2% accuracy. The DC2172A also features a wide input operating range of 4.5V-20V and is capable of delivering up to 3A of current on the primary output and up to 2A on the secondary output. The DC2172A also features an over temperature protection, short-circuit protection, and over-current protection.
The DC2172A supports a wide range of applications, including telecom, automotive, medical, industrial and other applications, and can be used for both switching and linear topologies. It supports a variety of flexible control schemes for different topologies, including: constant-on-time scheme (C-OT), adaptive-on-time scheme (A-OT) and proportional-on-time scheme (P-OT). The DC2172A also supports both synchronous and asynchronous operation.
The DC2172A is based on Analog Device’s switched DC/DC converter Faily SwitchFET fully integrated device. This device combines very high level of integration with high temperature performance, high switching frequency and high output accuracy. The device is a single-phase single-ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) topology.
The core of the DC2172A is the integrated switchFET device which contains a fully integrated power MOSFET, a fast soft start circuit, and an adaptive voltage positioning controller. The integrated power MOSFET helps to reduce component count and board area, improving efficiency and reliability. The integrated fast soft start circuit provides a smooth transition at the start of operation. This soft start circuit is adjustable through the resistor R17. The adaptive voltage positioning controller (AVPOS) provides a fixed on-time control to ensure a low harmonic output and reduce EMI.
The DC2172A also includes a number of convenient features such as: adjustable output voltage ranges, programmable current limit, adjustable soft-start, and adjustable current limit. The adjustable output voltage ranges provide flexibility for different application scenarios and help to optimize system performance. The programmable current limit feature ensures that higher levels of current delivery can be accurately set for a particular application. In addition, the adjustable soft-start feature lets users adjust the startup time for smooth transition when powering on.
The DC2172A evaluation board also includes a graphical user interface (GUI) for parameterizing the device. The GUI allows users to easily configure and control the device including setting the switching frequency, output voltages and current limits. The GUI also provides an easy way to monitor the board parameters in real-time and display the required values.
