DC2195B-B Evaluation Board and Working Principle

DC2195B-B evaluation board comprises two boards – the supply and the controller board. The DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS of this board provides users an array of features in the form of high-power, high-efficiency, and high-voltage output range. The evaluation board is designed to enable users to evaluate the performance of various semiconductor components used in power supply design.

In this evaluation board, the supply and the controller board resemble each other structurally. Both contain detailed layout and are designed for intricate electric requirements. The supply board is designed to offer an isolated DC input, while the controller board offers a DC link and PWM output. A wide range of voltage and current options offer users flexibility in the power supply designs.

The power supply consists of a two-stage design. In the primary stage, it converts the input voltage into the required output voltage and current. The secondary stage consists of a buck-boost/SEPIC topology providing the isolation, current regulation, and input voltage regulation. In the primary stage, a high-side MOSFET switches the primary side transformer and the rectifier diode produces a rectified output voltage.

In the control board, pulse-width modulation (PWM) is used to control the output voltage by regulating the primary stage. The PWM signal is given by a fast-response control loop through the Microchip dsPIC30F4011 microcontroller. To ensure constant output voltage, the microcontroller tracks the load and adjusts the PWM duty cycle accordingly.

Moreover, the microcontroller constantly monitors for any change in primary or secondary feedback voltage and automatically corrects it during an overload situation. When the load current exceeds the limit, the current mode protection feature enables the secondary side MOSFET to break on. This prevents damage to the power supply.

The power supply also features a wide input voltage range, enabling it to be used in a variety of applications. It features a soft-start feature to reduce inrush current and to avoid spikes at the start-up of the device. Moreover, the soft-start feature also allows the smooth and quick start-up of the device at a lower output voltage.
