Solid State Relays (SSR) are electronic switching devices which, like traditional mechanical relays, allow a low power signal to control a circuit with much higher power. While the construction of a traditional relay involves movable metal contacts which open and close when an electromagnetic coil is energized, a solid state relay employs semiconductors and optoelectronics to accomplish the same effect. The working principle of DRC3P48C4002 Solid State Relays is based on the use of a solid state switch (opto-isolator) and a single or dual SCR relay design. In the single SCR configuration, an isolated control voltage is applied to a LED which provides a light signal to the input of an opto-isolator. This energizes the opto-isolator, which in turn activates the output circuit SCR, providing an on-state or low resistance path, allowing current to flow between the input and output sides of the SSR.

In the dual SCR configuration, a logic voltage (on/off) signal is applied to the gates of two SCRs which are connected in an AC configuration across the main terminals of the SSR. This provides the same on-state or low resistance path, thus allowing current to flow between the input and output sides of the SSR. The dual SCR design provides superior performance and higher current capability than the single SCR design.
