The DRV8802PWP is a three phase pre-drivers for brushless motors. Developed by Texas Instruments, DRV8802PWP is a highly efficient and trusted device for brushless DC motor applications with up to 4.6 A peak phase current. Thermal protection with overtemperature warning, open clamp detection and current limit protection are also provided.The DRV8802PWP is a part of TI’s power management and motor driver family (PMIC – Motor Drivers, Controllers). This PWP series provides three phase output and is capable of driving 6, 8 and 10-step commutations. It is capable of working with a Hall input or with no sensors.The pre-driver consists of an internal control block and three half bridge drivers. The internal control block consists of the Dynamic Kill System Wakeup that reduces current inrush at system startup and a slew rate controller to minimize the EMI. Also, It includes logic to decode Hall inputs (from an external Hall sensor device) and a PID loop for speed control . DRV8802PWP also provides the external components to interface with a motor, such as current-sense amplifiers (me provides 0.75Vish), gate drivers, PWM generation, protection circuitry and demagnetization protection.The DRV8802PWP are used in a variety of applications, such as electric pumps and electric bicycles. It provides quite a few advantates to using a three phase driver compared with a single phase. The most common advantage is the higher efficiency of a three-phase system compared to a single-phase one. Also, since it allows for higher currents and a higher torque, the motor starts faster and runs smoother.The DRV8802PWP device is based upon its three hall inputs and a speed control loop. When an enabled Hall effect sensor detects an external magnetic flux, a signal is sent to the Hall Effect input terminal. The if the signal is greater than the threshold, the Hall Effect recognition is triggered.This signal is then received by the speed control loop, which includes an ADC, multiplier, and two PID controllers. This speed control loop converts the input signal the oscillator signal which will be send to the driver.While the inputs of the DRV8802PWP is a Hall Effect sensor and a step direction signal, the output side is a 3-phase output PWM signal. The PWM signal is generated by the IF (or inner loop) speed control. The IF speed control track the output frequency with the input rate. This is what enables the electric motors to run faster and more efficiently. As mentioned, the DRV8802PWP provides a three phase output, which can be used to either drive a 6-step or 8-step commutation. The 6-step commutation is the most often seen in motor control systems. The 8-step commutation can offer advantages such as smoother operation, greater torque and faster acceleration.The DRV8802PWP is also integrated with many features such as voltage and current limits, thermal protection and open drain detection to enable system safety. Moreover, it includes a slew rate controller to reduce the EMI, increasing system reliability. In conclusion, the DRV8802PWP is a three-phase motor pre-driver with integrated PWM generation, UV and UVLO over voltage protection, thermal protection and open drain detection. It is a highly efficient pre-driver that provides a 6, 8 and 10-step commutations, allowing for smoother and faster acceleration.
