DRV8886EVM is an evaluation and demonstration board and kit for evaluating and demonstrating the DRV8886 low-voltage H-bridge motor driver. It is an integrated power stage and advanced protection features that safely and efficiently perform stepper and brushed motor control. The device also provides several protection features such as adjustable current limits, undervoltage lockout, overtemperature, overvoltage, and short-circuit protection. The DRV8886 is designed to operate over a wide voltage range, peaking at 30 V logic supply with wide variety of low-voltage motor types.

The DRV8886EVM makes it easy to evaluate the DRV8886 and obtain a thorough understanding of its operation and features. It includes both a stepper motor control and brushed motor control operation. The DRV8886EVM application field includes e-bike, home appliances, hand-held tools, HVAC and home automation systems. DRV8886EVM runs on 4.5 to 30 V and delivers up to 45-A peak output current.

Working Principle

The DRV8886EVM is powered by a DC power source and a mixed-signal microcontroller. The power stage is designed to provide optimal performance, maximum efficiency, and low EMI for a variety of low voltage motor types. The microcontroller has two modes of operation: Full-bridge mode, and Single-bridge / Torque Control mode, where each mode can be used for either stepper motor control or brushed motor control.

The full-bridge mode is the main integrated feature of the DRV8886EVM. In this mode, the output of the H-bridge is wired in a full-bridge configuration, allowing for C and R-load types with either direction of rotation capability.The single-bridge / torque control mode utilizes the current sense to limit the current in the load and gives the user the ability to adjust the maximum current limit. Additionally, the DRV8886 has the capability to monitor the device temperature using a separate NTC thermistor.

The DRV8886EVM is equipped with protection features such as adjustable current limits, undervoltage lockout, overvoltage, and overtemperature. Additionally, the DRV8886 includes an internal watchdog timer that initiates a reset if it is not periodically cleared by the microcontroller. This watchdog timer can be programmed with a timeout period of up to 8.2 s.

DRV8886EVM has several user-adjustable parameters, including overcurrent, overtemperature, short-circuit, voltage clamp, and disable voltage. The DRV8886EVM can be programmed with either software-based or hardware-based configuration methods, providing the user with maximum flexibility.

The DRV8886EVM also includes several power protection features that help ensure safe and reliable operation, such as overvoltage protection, reverse-load protection, precharge, and charge pump. The protection features of the DRV8886EVM help to protect the system from destructive conditions, such as short-circuits, undervoltage, overvoltage, overtemperature, and reverse-load conditions.
