Delay lines in clock and timing applications are used as a delay circuit or component of a circuit to temporarily store or hold a signal or waveform that\'s been received typically in digital form. The DS1100M-300 is a delay line specifically designed to make use of a digital signal, and it takes the form of an integrated chip. It\'s packaged in a 32-pin dip format, making it relatively simple to include in applications where a digital signal needs to be delayed. The DS1100M-300 comes with two selectable ranges for delay range: a fixed rate of 5ns and a variable rate of 7.8ns through to 156ns. For the variable rate, an external resistor is needed. The variable rate is used to adjust the delay without having to change the circuit.

How does it work? The DS1100M-300 is made up of a central control unit and a special delay circuit with an accompanying address. The address contains input data to the formed CCD (Charge Coupled Device). An address specifies a row and a column in the CCD. The data is then transported along the column to its intended row. During the transit time, the data is continually transferred until it reaches its row address, at which point the CCD stores the data in the row. This stored data is then copied over to the memory element until it can be recalled. This delay is formed by the time it takes the data to travel a certain distance through the CCD.

The DS1100M-300 isn\'t limited to just clock and timing applications, but also can be used as a programmable delay as well as an input or output signal transfer device. In terms of usage, the DS1100M-300 is most often found in communication equipment, instrumentation systems and high frequency signal sources. The DS1100M-300 is suitable for applications that require a large amount of programmable delay, and since it\'s relatively simple to incorporate into clock and timing systems, it\'s a versatile and cost-effective choice for applications requiring a digital signal delay.
