A PMIC (Power Management IC) – Supervisors is a product designed to ensure that voltage and current level in electronic equipment remains within an optimal range. DS1232S is a device of PMIC - Supervisors invented by Maxim Integrated. It provides great value in feature-per-cost, offering precise levels of system protection. The application field and working principle of DS1232S will be discussed in this article.

As a supervisor IC, DS1232S has a wide range of application and is suitable for many situations. A few common uses are digital Point-of-Load (POL) power management, enterprise computing systems, smart power supplies, battery-operated systems, handheld devices, and many other portable systems. DS1232S basically offers two types of function, voltage monitor and system reset.

The voltage monitor function of DS1232S provides a quick means of verifying that the power supply voltage levels remain within a specified range. With its internal voltage divider accurately calibrated, it can offer accurate settings for over- or under-voltage trip thresholds and Voltage Margin. In addition, the monitoring delay can be programmed, allowing the designer or system tester the ability to delay the monitor’s actions anywhere from 25 µs to 255 ms,

The system reset function of DS1232S provides a simple and effective reset capability for a system when the supply voltage drops below the programmed level threshold. It is originally designed to prevent system instability when the power supply voltage drops. In addition, the reset signal of DS1232S can be used to trigger other systems to put the system into a safe shutdown state.

Therefore, DS1232S can be configured as reset and/or monitors to guard against incorrect power supply operation. In this regard, it acts as the guard of a system, watching both the voltage and current levels to prevent the system from entering a malfunction state. Thus, it provides great security for many applications.

For its working principle, the DS1232S combines a voltage monitor and system reset in a single package. At the core, it contains an on-chip linear regulator to ensure that there is a stable reference voltage. This reference voltage is used for the supervision circuitry to assure that if the power supply voltage drops below 270 mV, then a reset is pulled low. On the other hand, when the power supply voltage remains above the different threshold levels, the reset output is inactive.

In addition, DS1232S also has a sophisticated error detect circuit, which can detect and flag an error condition if the power supply voltage drops below the error threshold while the reset is active. It keeps this flag high until a power-on reset occurs.

It is noteworthy that DS1232S also provides protection against a rising power supply. The UVUVSL pin monitors the supply voltage and issues a reset if the voltage exceeds the nominal strength. This pin can be used to detect an over-voltage situation and issue a reset to the system.
