.PMIC - Supervisors: DS1233DZ-5+ Application Field and Working Principle
An essential component in any industrial system is its power management module, and one of the most prevalent and important type of power management units is the PMIC supervisor. PMIC supervisors, or power management integrated circuits, receive, process and manage power distribution within a device, including components for power monitoring, power conversion and power gating. DS1233DZ-5+ supervisors are one type of PMIC supervisor, composed of the DS1233, an ultra low-voltage supervisor IC, and two N-channel MOSFETs. In this article, we will examine the application fields and working principle of the DS1233DZ-5+ supervisor.
Application Fields
The DS1233DZ-5+ supervisor is best suited for applications such as medium/high current, regulated non-isolated DC-DC power supplies and voltage regulated output voltage circuits. The dual, N-channel MOSFETs included in the supervisor, combined with the DS1233 internal circuit design, make the supervisor ideal for use in multiple power rails in the same system.
The DS1233DZ-5+ supervisor is also well suited for driving MOSFETs in Portable Battery Operated Systems (PBOS), where high performance, low power consumption and compact size are required. PBOS usually include multiple power rails and the dual MOSFET arrangement of the supervisor can minimize the total area taken up in the device by providing multiple power rails all within a single IC. The DS1233DZ-5+ supervisor is capable of driving up to 1.3A load current, making it a great choice for powering medium and high current rails.
Additionally, the supervisor offers protection from under-voltage and low supply voltage, making it a reliable choice for loads that require protection from power dips and brownouts. Working Principle
The DS1233DZ-5+ comprises two elements; the DS1233 voltage supervisor IC and two N-channel MOSFETs. The DS1233 is a low-power, ultra-low voltage supervisor IC, working with a low supply voltage of 1.0V and below, providing threshold detect, voltage monitoring, power sequencing and reset functions.
The integrated MOSFETs and the DS1233 function together to provide level shifting and load switching functions. The integrated MOSFETs are used to level-shift between logic and load levels, thus allowing the supervisor to control the power supply of the load in the range of 2.5V to VCC, while the DS1233 provides threshold detect, voltage monitoring, power sequencing and reset functions. After the threshold voltage VTH is reached, the DS1233 turns on MOSFETs in order to switch power between logic and load levels, and can also be used to sequence the turn-on of multiple power rails.
The supervisor also has integrated overvoltage protection (OVP) as well as undervoltage protection (UVP). The voltage monitoring pin (VMON) of the DS1233 can be configured to detect an overvoltage, at which point the supervisor turns off the power. Similarly, the DS1233 can be set to detect an undervoltage condition, either due to a power dip or brownout, at which point it will also turn off the power.
