DS1236-10+ Supervisors, manufactured by Dallas Semiconductor, is a prolific example of such. DS1236-10+ Supervisors are non-volatile memory ICs, used in a variety of applications, including microprocessor power control. In most applications, they are used in conjunction with battery charging ICs to create a reliable power solution. The DS1236-10+ Supervisor is programmed using the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or using a 3-Wire Interface. For configurations using the SPI, the data is sent over four or five pins (depending on the user’s needs). For the 3-Wire Interface, a single-wire connection is used, to provide access to the IC’s registers and settings, and the tenth pin is used to transfer the data In the 3-Wire Interface, the slave device (DS1236-10+ Supervisor) is powered from the Clock and Data lines of the Master device. The format can be both Standard (3-wire) and Standard Plus (4-wire).

In addition, for the 3-Wire Interface, the following commands are used for programming the supervisor:

  • Set/Clear Function (sets or clears a specific bit in the memory array).
  • Read Status (reads the contents of the memory array).
  • Write Threshold (writes the hardware register values).
  • Erase/Program Memory (erases or programs the memory array).
  • Check/Verify Memory (checks the contents of the memory array).
  • Read Value (reads the value of the memory array).
  • Reset (resets the entire memory array).

The DS1236-10+ Supervisor operates at temperatures from 0˚C to 70˚C, is RoHS compliant, and is available in a 16-pin TSSOP package.Chip features of the DS1236-10+ Supervisor include an on-chip 10-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), a Sigma Delta Modulator (SDM) for voltage monitoring, and a power fail detector which provides fail flags when the system fails and enters the fail state.
