This device is an advanced once-per-second-reset/supervisory circuit. The device uses a highly accurate on-chip comparator to monitor two separate power supplies and generate a reset if either drops below the reset threshold.

This micro-power reset circuit is suitable for applications such as PC systems, instrumentation, digital controllers, data acquisition systems, and back panel monitoring. It typically uses a low-power 8-bit microcontroller and a power supply detector. The DS1706EPA+ is also well-suited for applications that require a reset in the event of a failure of either the primary power supply or a backup supply.

The DS1706EPA+ features a wide operating voltage range of 2.7V to 18.0V, low operating and startup current, push-button reset capability, and advanced internal compensation to ensure accurate reset thresholds independent of temperature and power-supply transients. Additionally, the device includes adjustable primary and backup reset thresholds that can be set ±10% of any Vcc voltage as well as adjustable power- up/down delays.

The working principle of the DS1706EPA+ can be divided into two parts: the reset timer and the comparator. The reset timer is driven by an internal clock (the Timebase) and provides a periodic output pulse. This output pulse control is enabled under normal mode and disabled during reset mode. The Timebase output is used to drive the reset timer’s reset input. When reset is activated, the reset output is held low. The comparator monitors the voltage level of both the primary and backup supply and generates an active-low reset signal when the primary supply drops below the reset threshold or the backup supply falls below an adjustable threshold.

The DS1706EPA+ features an exceptional power-saving design, requiring approximately 100nA typical. This allows the device to remain active and monitor the primary and backup power supplies with minimal power consumption. Additionally, the device is capable of communicating with a host processor via an I2C serial bus. This allows additional flexibility in controlling the reset circuit, including setting the backup reset threshold and the desired delay times.
