Data acquisition is a term used to describe the digital metering, logging or recording of various types of data from the environment. Digital potentiometers have become important instruments in the data acquisition field. The DS1802E is an example of a digital potentiometer used for data acquisition and control. The DS1802E is an 8-bit non-volatile digital potentiometer with 2 channels. It is capable of providing a wide range of resistance values from 0 to 10K ohms. When the code is applied to the DS1802E, a series of resistors and switches are activated. Each of these resistors changes the resistance in the circuit, which in turn results in either a decrease or an increase in current. The amount of current change depends on the number of bits in the code and the ratio of the active resistors.

The device offers excellent reliability, thanks to its non-volatile memory, which can store up to 8-bits of data. This data can be stored even when the device is not powered. The reliable programming and low power requirements come from the device’s proprietary DataHold™ technology, which uses an internal flash memory cell to store the resistance setting.

The device also offers high-precision resistance measurement, thanks to its pair of linear resistors, which are connected directly to the eight-bit digital data word. The device’s built-in linear resistor network enables precision measurement to within 1% of the target resistance values.

In addition, the device offers an adjustable step resolution, which allows for finer control over the resistance. This feature can be used to precisely adjust the device to specific resistance levels.

Finally, the device offers low power consumption and industry-leading standby power, thanks to its low-leakage wide-range termination resistors.
