EA8894 is a highly compact evaluation board dedicated to the evaluation of the EconoDUAL™ 4™ high-efficiency, synchronous rectification, DC-DC and AC-DC off-line SMPS controller IC. It provides a versatile platform for developers to test different configurations of this controller and optimize system parameters for maximum efficiency.

The integrated solution features an AC-DC power stage along with an additional DC-DC switcher IC configured for continuous conduction mode, providing an output voltage of +12V with a maximum output current of 450mA. As the EconoDUAL™ 4™ controller IC supports up to 800 kHz switching frequencies (for higher power applications) and up to 4 A of output current, it provides the ideal platform for evaluation of the EconoDUAL 4 controller IC for high-efficiency applications such as the one envisaged in the EA8894.

The board encased in a (sloping) SIP package and 95 x 30 x 18 mm dimensions, keeps the BOM count to a minimum and requires minimal external components and two separate power sources, one for the AC/DC converter and one for the DC/DC converter. All external components are connected to board via through hole pin terminals facilitating easy access.

Working principle and applications:

The EA8894 is designed to provide a high-efficiency, robust and cost-effective solution for a wide range of low voltage, low to medium power applications. It is suitable for a wide range of off-line SMPS applications, such as televisions, small computers, monitors, peripherals etc. The board implements both AC-DC and DC-DC converter topologies, so that it is possible to evaluate both types of SMPS solutions in one board.

The EA8894 is a complete dual/single stage automatic transition converter with a maximum output power of approximately 22 W. It is based on EconoDUAL 4 synchronous rectification controller that operates with a fixed frequency optimized to obtain the best possible efficiency while operating in different conditions. It employs the valley/skip mode technology that helps to reduce the switching losses during light load conditions thereby increasing the overall efficiency of the power converter.

The EA8894 uses the latest high-voltage MOSFETs, as well as high-performance components such as Schottky diodes, operational amplifiers, ferrite, bus bars, and transformers. This greatly increases the performance of the board, especially for high-frequency applications. The board is also tested and evaluated for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) compliance in order to ensure its compatibility with other equipment.

Due to the integrated solution, the EA8894 represents an ideal platform for testing and evaluating the EconoDUAL 4 SMPS controller IC and optimizing SMPS system parameters for maximum efficiency. The evaluation board also allows the user to evaluate various parameters such as line and load response, overvoltage protection, undervoltage lockout threshold, and soft-start.
