The oxide layer on the aluminum anode forms a dielectric which is interrupted by a thin organic barrier film to prevent the electrolyte from passing directly into the anode material. The dielectric layer is formed in a liquid solution, or in an electrolyte rich in protons. The cathode electrode is composed of an electrolyte and a metal (usually nickel) grid. An external voltage is applied to the capacitor, causing an electrical current to flow from the anode to the cathode.
