  • The first law of electrolytic capacitors: electrochemical oxidation forms dielectric films on the surface of aluminum foils.
  • The second law of electrolytic capacitors: capacitance is determined by the thickness and quality of dielectric films.

To be specific, when the DC voltage is applied to an aluminum electrolytic capacitor, the surface of the anodic aluminum foil produces an oxide film. This oxide film is equivalent to a dielectric film with a large dielectric constant which is the capacitance of the capacitor. A part of the electrolyte molecules are adsorbed on the surface of the oxide film. Then they form a medium that enhances the electrical properties between the two electrodes. Therefore, when a current flows through the capacitor, electrochemical oxidation and ionization occur between the two electrodes.
