Aluminium electrolytic capacitors – An overview

Aluminium electrolytic capacitors (AECs) are widely used in a variety of applications since their invention in the 1950s. These capacitors function as energy storage devices which hold electrical charge temporarily until it can be discharged to perform a certain task. In general, they are made up of two conducting plates with alternate layers of an aluminium oxide film and conductive electrolyte in between.

As compared to other types of capacitors, AECs offer several advantages such as their comparatively larger capacitance values and relatively small size. Other advantages include higher operational frequencies, good insulation properties, low dielectric losses and better stability. Moreover, they also have a lower ESR (equivalent series resistance) value which increases their efficiency.

Design of Aluminium electrolytic capacitors

The main components of an AEC are the anode and the cathode plates, the electrolyte and a dielectric oxide film. The anode plate is usually made of aluminium foil and the cathode plate is usually a conductive material such as an organic polymer or a metal. The dielectric oxide film acts as an insulating layer between the anode and cathode plates. The electrolyte helps to reduce the electric resistance of the capacitor.

When a voltage is applied to an AEC, the anode and cathode plates start to attract electrons in opposite directions. As the voltage increases, the current flow through the capacitor also increases and it charges up. With the presence of the electrolyte, the electric charge is stored on the dielectric oxide layer which is sandwiched between the anode and cathode plates. When the voltage reaches a certain threshold, the charge begins to transfer back to the anode and cathode plates and the capacitor begins to discharge.
